Lewis and Clark: Who discovered whom?

As we enter the bicentennial year of Lewis and Clark's journey across America, Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery is pleased to present the Lewis & Clark series of prints and paintings by Native American John Potter (Chippewa).

John Potter's series of paintings on the subject of Lewis & Clark offer a Native American perspective to this chapter in history. "Imagine hungry guests coming to your house," says Potter. "You feed them, give them a place to sleep, and when they leave they take your furniture, interesting items they see around your home and ask if they can borrow your car. I think the Native American perspective is that Indians are tired of hearing about [Lewis & Clark's journey]. Native people criss-crossed this country for millenia.

"The Native Peoples had existed for thousands of years, with sophisticated cultures and complex trade routes when the Corps of Discovery came through," Potter continues, "Do you know what it's like to be explored?"

"As far as my Shoshone friends are concerned, Lewis and Clark walk on water, but that's because Indian people honor Sacagawea. A lot of people think what she did was good, despite the subsequent devistation…"

The four paintings from this series appeared in a show at Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery that examined 'The Native American Perpective of Lewis and Clark' (November 2003).

John Potter - Sacagawea Discovers Celilo Falls

"Your woman who accompanied you that long dangerous and fatigueing rout to the Pacific Ocian and back diserved a greater reward for her attention and services on their rout than we had in our power to give her at the Mandans." —Letter from William Clark to Charbonneau, August 1806.

John Potter - Shoshone Discover Lewis and Clark

…The Corps of Discovery needed horses—and soon—for their journey down the west slopes of the Continental Divide and on to the Columbia River. John Potter - A Taste of Freedom, York

"York was an important contributor to American history... He knew how it felt to be treated as property, as an equal, and as a superior human inspiration to all people in today's world. He deserves to be remembered as a hero, and his place in history should not be forgotten." —Ron Craig, filmmaker and author.

John Potter - Haystack Rock Discovers Lewis and Clark

...Meriwether Lewis wrote of "great joy in camp" when his party finally viewed the ocean. The vista of the great Pacific had to have been stunning to them all, but especially to the great Sacagawea. She must have longed for her mountain home soon thereafter, for although the beautiful rocky coastline was like nothing she had ever seen, the winter spent on the coast was dreary, gray and rainy...
