Lewis & clark: two views through native american eyes

As we look back two hundred years in our nation’s history, we celebrate our discoveries, mourn those who have passed before us, and remember the lessons of our ancestors. This season of giving is also a time for reflection, for our past helps us to define our future.

Native American artists John Potter and Lillian Pitt offer works from a Native perspective on Lewis & Clark's journey two hundred years ago.

Robert Jefferson: Graphite and Ink Drawings

Drawings by Northern Cheyenne artist (and Portland local) Robert Jefferson. "Grandfather has given us all talents. If we choose to accept our talents, he blesses us with opportunities to share them with others. I have taught others how to draw, how to take their artistic talent and grow with it... I am happy seeing others grow while they learn to better express their artistic talents. Therefore I happily say, "Ha-ho, Grandfather."

The Elton Bennett Show
Elton Bennett made it in the early 1950s. He romanced us all with his memorable visions of our Pacific Northwest. His silkscreen prints celebrated rugged beaches, seabirds, massive twisted stumps, floating logs and ships slipping through the mist like ghosts-all without requiring the viewer to be cold and wet. In 1974, at the height of his creative powers, he and his wife Flora lost their lives in fatal plane crash and his works were vanquished to the eternities...or so it seemed.Come to Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery to see one of the largest show's of the work of Elton Bennett. Three never released prints of his Totem Pole series have been reproduced for this retrospective show which continues through the month of May. Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery is Portland, Oregon's eclusive representative for the Evelyn Bennett Collection of Elton Bennet's work.

Lewis and Clark's 'Corps of Discovery' as seen through the eyes of Native Americans.
For a limited engagement, Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery will feature Lewis and Clark's "Corps of Discovery" as seen through the eyes of Native Americans.

"Imagine hungry guests coming to your house. You feed them, give them a place to sleep, and when they leave, they take your furniture, interesting items they see around your home, and ask if they can borrow your car." According to Native American artist John Potter, that's what it was like when Lewis and Clark "discovered" Native Americans two hundred years ago. "The native peoples had existed for thousands of years, with sophisticated cultures and complex trade routes when the Corps of Discovery came through," Potter continues, "Do you know what it's like to be explored?"

John Potter's art work tries to show the flip side of Lewis and Clark's expedition. With paintings such as "The Shoshone Discover Lewis and Clark" and "Haystack Rock Discovering Lewis and Clark", Potter brings a new perspective on the famous expedition.

His paintings and prints will premier on November 6, 2003, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery, together with a show case of other Native American artists including Native American Artist Frank Salcido, who will offer his take on Lewis and Clark through the use of ledger drawings. Other artists will be available at the limited opening too.

Brad Yazzolino will present the limited edition York poster from the documentary about York, "Who Was That Black Man Standing Next to Clark?" Cayuse Nez Perce artist Maynard White Owl Lavadour will debut his wedding band series in 18K gold. Goldsmith Laurent Worme will present his sterling and 18k gold equestrian series. Master artist Gary Cooley will show bronzes representing the warrior spirit in Native American patriotism. Over 30 Native American pipes dating from 1810-1910 will be offered for the first time.

In honor of this special occasion, Anne/Amie Chateau Benoit Winery has opened up their barrels for an exclusive wine tasting. Visitors to the gallery will be able to meet the artists, purchase signed originals, and explore a private collection of historic documents, photographs, and other items from the Wild West circa 1860-1910.

The show will be on display for only four days. "I leased the entire second floor of the NW 23rd Avenue Commons just so I could get everyone together under one roof." says Bonnie Kahn, owner of the Wild West Gallery. "We could only do this for a short period of time because these pieces are in such high demand."

Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery is located at 1524 NW 23rd Ave #2. The show opens Thursday, November 6, @ 6 PM and continues until Sunday, November 9, 6 PM.

Regular Gallery hours are Tuesday, through Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 10-5 or by special appointment at (503) 293-9414.
