 November 5th, 2009 6-7 p.m. Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery 150 Years of Oregon: The Tribal Perspective Kathryn Harrison, former Tribal Chairwoman of the Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde will be discussing 150 years of Oregon from a tribal elder's perspective. She lived through the Termination Era, when the Eisenhower Administration stripped tribes of formal recognition and was instrumental in the fight to regain sovereignty for the Grande Ronde Tribe. Also, Shirod Younker (Coos-Coquille) will bring his traditional arts and discuss ways of promoting Native American art. |

 Thursday, December 4, 2008 Spirit of the Weaver Since the early 1800’s Joe Tanner’s family began trading with the Navajos. This relationship, based on trust, has flourished through the years. Recently, Joe began to show Navajo weavings to tribal elders, shamans, and weavers and asked the people if there was a language that the Navajo rugs were speaking. The answer was absolutely! For decades Navajo rugs and blankets have sat silently adorning walls and floors; but on Thursday, December 4, at 7 PM, the codes will be broken. Join us for this free lecture.  November 6 - 30, 2008 Hand-Painted Gourds by Agnes Sowle During the month of November, Bonnie Kahn’s Wild West Gallery will feature painted gourds by Agnes Sowle. Agnes, a county attorney, finds solace painting gourds in intricate geometric patterns influenced by ancient pueblo designs and many of her own creations. Show opens Thursday, November 6, from 5-9. Gourds will be on display for sale through the holidays. |

 May 1, 2008 Myth and Magic Doc Sharp and Sharon Logsdon share their collection of 3,000 Zuni Fetishes from seventy different artists. Zuni Fetishes are handcarved animals created to bring luck, wealth, marriage, happiness and many other blessings to the owner. Doc will also lecture about life with the Zuni on Saturday, May 3, from Noon-2pm, "The Power of the Zuni Animal Fetish". Joining Doc will be Patty Fawn, a world-renowned artist and member of the Lelooska Family. She will bring her hand-carved jewelry created in fossilized ivory, silver, gold and bronze depicting the different animals of the Northwest. Several other artists will also be on hand to talk about their work and answer any questions. Show opens Thursday, May 1, 5-9pm and ends May 31. Lecture is Saturday, May 3, Noon-2pm. |

 March 6, 2008 The Zapotec Collection The Zapotec Collection of fine hand-woven rugs and wall art created by master weavers from the ancient village of Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico are showcased this month at the gallery. These beautiful pieces of ethnic art stand out for their exceptional quality of weave, traditional dyes, design complexity, and for their expression of warmth and spirit.  Show Opening: February 2, 2006 Bonnie Kahn's This month we feature a variety of remarkable collections. Alix Mosieur presents her gourd paintings, original drawings, and sculpture. The Roger Hinen Collection: Roger Hinen, a paraplegic from the age of 20, dedicated his life to building his collection of Native American and Western art. His untimely death at 50 left his widow with one of the great collections of the twentieth century. Elizabeth Woodey, a Yakama artist, features her acrylic paintings.

 Show Opening: April 7 Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery, 1524 NW 23rd Ave. A Love of Liberty -- 100 years on the Western Frontier (Exhibit and Lecture) View the Battle of Wounded Knee; chase Pancho Villa to Mexico; view Siberia after World War I. These are the scenes you'll witness in the unpublished photos of Samel Waller, a Buffalo Soldier fighting on the American Frontier from 1890 to 1927. He spent over 40 years with the U.S. Army photographing these historic events. Waller's work gives us rare glimpses of the dynamic role of an African American soldier during this time. Anthony Powell, Waller's grandson, will exhibit many of these photographs at Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery on First Thursday, April 7, from 5 to 9 pm. In addition, he'll bring rare momentos from the battles in which Samuel participated. At this special event, a pin designed by nationally known artist Frank Salcido and backed by the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial will also be released in honor of York and begin its tour of the country.
On April 9, Anthony will join two other historians in a special lecture to accompany these works. Ron Craig, a writer/filmmaker and an expert on York (the African American slave who travelled with Lewis and Clark), will present his study of the slave. Carl Flipper will tell stories of his great grand-uncle Henry Flipper, the first African American officer in the regular Army and his experiences--from his time at West Point to his posthumous pardon by President Clinton. |

 February 2005 This February, the gallery offers a wonderful collection of Zuni Fetishes. The collection features a wide variety of fetishes—animals carved from a variety of stones that are meant to bring certain powers or magic to the possessor. |
 Show Opening: January 6 Bonnie Kahn's Wild West Gallery, 1524 NW 23rd Ave. This January, the gallery will feature the carvings of Rob Wurzer. Rob's work in copper, bone, antler, and other mixed media has been featured on "Oregon Art Beat." The artist will be at the gallery for the First Thursday opening. The show runs through the end of January.
