Gene Bluebird's father was Ojibway and Chippewa of the Wolf Clan his mother is Lakota and Oglalla of the American Horse Clan. Gene grew up in a traditional manner on the Pine Ridge and Turtle Hill Reservation.

He is a stonemason as are many of his relatives and ancestors. He is also a storyteller and artist.
